The plot, though — an unhappy Jew leaves women and is left by them, has a less-than-brilliant career despite his brilliance, is unhappy enough to almost kill himself (ridiculous, really) but resilient enough to express some optimism at the end ("I am pretty well satisfied to be") — has become a cliché.
